System Configuration

This site is best viewed using a screen resolution setting of 800 x 600 pixels, or higher. If you currently see a horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of this page and would like to eliminate this, you can do so by resi zing your screen. If you need help with your screen settings, please see our instructions for resizing your screen.

First on your checklist is a computer. To take full advantage of the interactivity of the courses, the following system profiles are REQUIRED:

PC Mac
Windows 95, 98, ME, NT or 2000 MacOS 7.5.1 or Later
200 MHz or faster processor 200 MHz or faster processor

* Note:Faster connection (cable modem, DSL) recommended if supported by ISP, but not required.

Note: Courseware cannot be accessed using Web TV

The final items you will need are a Java capable Browser, and the RealPlayer 8. For the Java capable browser we recommend Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, or Netscape Navigator 4.0 (or higher).

Note about the latest browser versions: Some features in Internet Explorer 6 may cause problems with certain portions of PennAdvance. For now, anyone who is using IE6 should download Netscape Navigator and use that for PennAdvance. We are developing work-arounds at this time and will keep students posted if this is an issue for them.

Wondering if your browser meets the specs? Take the Browsertest to find out.

Using a computer in a campus lab

If you are in Philadelphia, you can also use a computer in a lab on Penn's campus for PennAdvance. This may be useful if your own computer is down, or if you are already on campus for some other reason. You will need a PennCard for access to campus labs - if you do not already have one, send e-mail to advance@sas.upenn.edu or call Colleen Gasiorowski at 215-898-1684. It takes several days to obtain a PennCard, so allow yourself plenty of time.

To view a PennAdvance webcast, you will need to find a campus lab with RealPlayer 8 and headsets that you can use. Currently, four computer labs on campus have this software and equipment:

  • Rosengarten Computer Lab in Van Pelt Library
  • MMETS PC Computer Classroom in DRL
  • Graduate School of Fine Arts in Meyerson Hall
  • Medical School Microcomputer Center in Johnson Pavilion
Directions, telephone numbers, and hours for these labs (as well as all campus computer labs) is on the web at http://www.upenn.edu/computing/view/labs/lablist.html .
